    Greetings from the President

    Dear PACA members:

Two months have already passed since I was elected PACA President. During that time, I have been busy planning the next PACA convention including a trip to Hawaii to meet with senior PACA members (Dr. Klopf, Dr. Kawashima, Dr. MacCrosky and Dr. Dong Jae Lee) to discuss matters such as the convention site and schedules, feasibility of having the PACA journal (Human Communication) registered officially in the Social Sciences Citation Index, and a special drive to encourage as many communication scholars as possible--professors, graduate students, and other communication practitioners--to join PACA as regular members.

PACA will hold its sixth biennial convention on January 7 and 8, 2007 in Honolulu at the Center for Korean Studies, at the University of Hawaii. The convention is open to all interdisciplinary themes relevant to communication. Papers, panels and special programs on a variety of topics related to all phases of human communication will be presented. Opportunities for interpersonal interaction will be a part of this event with American, Japanese, Korean, New Zealander, Taiwanese, Filipino, Guamanian, Australian, Chinese and Hawaiian participants intermingling.

We live in a highly unstable world plagued by cultural conflicts. Human beings have gained mastery over energy, matter, and inanimate nature, and now are learning to control illnesses and even premature death. However, we seem to have remained in the Stone Age as far as our handling of human relations is concerned. Every reduction in physical distance between people makes the world more aware of the psychic distance that divides people. For millennia, time and space proved effective barriers to frequent intercultural contact. With the dissolution of these barriers and the advent of the global village, it has become undeniably apparent that people from divergent cultures have failed to decrease the psychological "distances" between themselves.

To co-exist peacefully in this world where cultural conflicts are ever intensifying, each person is urgently called upon to inculcate into his or her personal psyche the need for international competence, that is, a special knowledge of foreign cultures, including verbal and nonverbal behavior patterns, cultural values and beliefs (reasoning and thinking patterns), attitudes and an understanding of the major economic, social and political variables affecting the conduct of international affairs. To this end, PACA convention is devoted.

We sincerely hope you will be able to attend and join us in our efforts to make this world a better, safer place through cross-cultural understanding.

       Yours truly,

       Myung Seok Park

       President,

       Pacific & Asian Communication Association
